Jill Scott is the only daughter of her mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. The family of Jill Scott consisted of both her mother and grandmother. Scott is an all-only child. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating, she attended Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had at two different jobs while taking classes in secondary education. Her goal was to be an instructor of English in a secondary institution. The dream however was put on hold when after 3 years of studying and working as a teachers aide she dropped out of university. Her career began by performing live poems and the work of her own. She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson, a member of The Roots. The two ended up working together in writing You Got Me. She came out during an Roots concert. After that, she got collaborations for instance, with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. While on the Canada tour for Rent, the Broadway musical Rent She gained invaluable experiences performing. She was contracted by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
